ANNE WHALON
ABOUT ME
As an artist, I find joy in the experience of working with pastels and creating rich, velvety textures that invite viewers to enjoy my paintings. Through bold strokes and subtle shades, I strive to capture the beauty of the world around me. Working with pastels allows me to explore the interplay of light and shadows. I find inspiration in the fleeting moments of nature and the stories that unfold in the simplest of scenes.
I’ve been an award-winning artist and art educator for many years. I worked in NYC as a textile designer for 10+ years, developing a fresh, loose and vivid style of painting. I moved back to the Philadelphia area, returning to my love of fine art, first in watercolor, in which I taught classes for over a decade, and then in pastel.
I love the way pastel weaves drawing and painting together creating such beautiful textures and effects only pastel can achieve. I enjoy painting in Plein Aire trying to interpret the landscape not as a realist painter, but as an artist trying to capture the feeling and hidden colors of the scene before me. I love color and it’s evident in my vivid paintings.
I’m a signature member of the Philadelphia Pastel Society and an Associate Member of the Pastel Society of America and IAPS. I am also a signature member of the Philadelphia Watercolor Society and the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society.
My paintings have been selected for many national juried exhibitions and I have received numerous awards, including most recently:
2024 Wayne Art Center Member Show - Great Frame Up Award
2023 Philadelphia Pastel Society National Juried Exhibition – 2nd Place
2023 Hill School Award of Excellence
